Corrie Dela Cruz

 New CFA Charterholder

Describe your career path since graduating from university.

I graduated from University of the Philippines, Diliman with a degree on BS Business Administration and Accountancy on April 1999 and took my CPA board exams in October 1999.  I joined the Corporate Finance Division of SGV & Co (Ernst and Young) in December 1999.  I then moved to the Credit Risk Management Department of HSBC as a Management Trainee in January 2001.  In June 2005, I moved to the Global Markets Department (Treasury) of HSBC, initially with the Derivatives Trading Desk as a Senior Trader, until June 2006 when I moved to the Corporate Sales Desk as a Vice President and Senior Associate.

Describe your current job.  Which part of the CFA curriculum do you find most relevant to your current job?

I am part of a team that is responsible for structuring and marketing of treasury products, which includes foreign exchange, and foreign exchange and interest rate derivatives, to help corporate clients manage their financial and market risks.  We help our clients identify their exposures and provide solutions to help them manage their exposures.  We are responsible for maintaining strong treasury relationships and identifying opportunities to sell structured products.  All aspects of the CFA program
has helped my career, from the technical to the ethics apects.  The CFA program has given me the added technical, conceptual and ethical framework that helps me navigate the problems, opportunities and issues that I face in my day-to-day work.

How has the CFA program helped your career?
The CFA program has provided me with the added technical knowledge that helps me understand my clients and their exposures further in finding the right solutions that my clients require.

What advice would you give someone looking to pursue the CFA program?
My key advice is to focus on learning by understanding the principles.  At the same time, take advantage of any opportunity to exchange notes with those who have taken the exams before.  Lastly, I recommend to follow the LOS to the letter.

What is your favorite way of spending weekends?

Weekends are spent with my husband and family.  We spend the time doing exercise and sports, such as badminton, going to the gym, golf or running, and trying out new restaurants.  We also enjoy traveling out of town to Tagaytay or to nearby countries, especially on long weekends.

Are you a supporter of world peace, cleaner environment, and elimination of world poverty and hunger?

My priority is the elimination of world poverty and hunger.  When people have addressed the basic needs, they become more responsible human beings. When people have hopes for a brighter future, they will not think of war but would like to live in peace and in a clean and healthy environment.  As such, I believe that the first focus is to deal with the inequalities of this world, which is to deal with poverty and hunger.
